Abstact bodies
Here, my main critical text was Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema by Laura Mulvey, through which I could understand the politics and dynamics of the gaze. I researched early feminist avant-garde cinema to see how they conquered the oppressive gaze. My overarching question in the project was the glaring lack of the representations of male nude in art, which I concluded has its roots in heteronormativity and the strong, active role of the male in traditional societies. Ultimately, I arrived at a more modern, less condemnatory outlook on the politics of the gaze and created six delicate embroidered male half-nudes. Aren’t they adorable?
